History

Promoting Excellence in Wisconsin Wrestling Since 1957

Our Heritage

Originally founded as the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association (WWCA) in 1957, our organization has been serving the wrestling community for over six decades. In 2024, we evolved to become the Wisconsin Wrestling Association (WWA) to be more inclusive of wrestling officials, past coaches, administrators, and other wrestling enthusiasts. Anyone who has information, articles or pictures pertaining to our history are asked to please share that information with the Alumni Research Committee. All items that are shared will be returned to the original owner; we request in advance that we be allowed to make copies of the shared information.

2024: A New Chapter

In 2024, our organization evolved from the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association to the Wisconsin Wrestling Association to embrace the entire wrestling community - including officials, past coaches, administrators, and wrestling enthusiasts from all backgrounds.

Our Journey Through the Years

1957: Founding

The Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association was established by a group of dedicated high school wrestling coaches who recognized the need for a unified body to advocate for the sport, support coaches, and foster youth wrestling programs.

1960s-1970s: Growth Period

Wrestling began to gain more popularity in Wisconsin. The WWCA played a pivotal role in this growth by organizing coaching clinics, workshops, and annual meetings designed to share best practices, introduce new techniques, and create a community among wrestling coaches.

Establishment of Fall Wrestling Clinic

One of the significant milestones in our history was the establishment of the annual Fall Wrestling Clinic. This event became a cornerstone for the association, providing an opportunity for coaches to come together, learn from nationally recognized experts, and prepare for the upcoming wrestling season.

Advocacy and Representation

Our association has always been a strong advocate for wrestling at the state level. We work closely with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) to ensure that wrestling rules, regulations, and policies are fair and conducive to the sport's growth.

George Martin Hall of Fame

In honor of one of Wisconsin's most influential wrestling figures, we established the George Martin Hall of Fame. This hall of fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the sport of wrestling in Wisconsin, celebrating coaches, athletes, and supporters who have made significant impacts.

Annual Convention

The WWA annual convention became a flagship event, bringing together coaches, officials, and wrestling supporters from across Wisconsin. The convention provides professional development, recognizes outstanding achievement, and sets the direction for the organization's future.

Academic All-State Program

Recognizing that wrestlers excel not just on the mat but in the classroom, the WWA established the Academic All-State program to honor student-athletes who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement alongside their wrestling accomplishments.

Girls Wrestling

As girls wrestling grew rapidly throughout Wisconsin, the WWA expanded its programs and recognition to fully support female athletes and coaches. The addition of girls wrestling awards and programs reflects the association's commitment to the entire wrestling community.

2024: Wisconsin Wrestling Association

The organization officially rebranded from the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association (WWCA) to the Wisconsin Wrestling Association (WWA), broadening its mission to include officials, past coaches, administrators, and all wrestling enthusiasts — uniting the full Wisconsin wrestling community under one banner.

George Martin Hall of Fame

The George Martin Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to wrestling in Wisconsin. Named after one of the sport's most influential figures in our state, this recognition celebrates the coaches, athletes, officials, and supporters who have helped shape Wisconsin wrestling into what it is today.

Inductees are selected based on their impact on the sport, their dedication to young wrestlers, and their lasting legacy within the Wisconsin wrestling community.
